The Decade for the Oceans

January 1st 2021 marked the start of The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (the Decade) and we are delighted that Edinburgh Ocean Leaders (EOL) is a collaborating partner.

Over the next 10 years, the Decade will provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support the actions of scientists, policy-makers, industry, civil society and the wider public to sustainably manage the oceans. It has been referred to as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to foster technology, deliver scientific knowledge and build capacity to reverse the decline in ocean health and help to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Vision of the Decade aligns closely with the overall rationale and goals of EOL: to facilitate mutual learning between ocean professionals from diverse geographies and sectors, to enhance reach and influence through collaborative action, and to create an impactful network of exceptional ocean professionals. We look forward to seeing the contributions of the EOL community, both as individuals and as a network of peers, over the coming decade.
