The 2022 Field Mission: EOL head to Cape Verde

From 23rd October 2022, the 2022 cohort of Ocean Leaders will gather for a week in Cape Verde for the second Edinburgh Ocean Leader field mission. The Ocean Leaders will be joined by the co-founders and co-directors of EOL, Sandy Tudhope and Meriwether Wilson and the EOL Leadership Coach Sandra Morson.

What is the field mission?

The field mission is a core element of the Ocean Leaders executive leadership programme. It is multiday gathering of the present cohort of Ocean Leaders which happens in a different coastal location each year.

The field mission is an opportunity for the Ocean Leaders to meet in person and build on the foundations of teamwork and trust developed during the monthly online coaching sessions. It also provides a space for learning and knowledge sharing as the Ocean Leaders explore issues and strategies for problem-solving in diverse and complex ocean contexts.

The group will take part in a week of varied ocean-centred and community-related activities including visiting a marine protected area, meeting with fisher communities and joining a beach-clean up event.

Why Cape Verde?

Tommy Melo, a 2021 Ocean Leader is the host of this year’s field mission. He is the co-founder of Biosfera – a marine conservation organisation in Cape Verde.

Tommy has put together a week of activities and experiences to engage, educate and connect the Ocean Leaders in the work being done in Cape Verde to address ocean issues.

Cape Verde has a complex and internationally significant ocean setting. It has the largest area of ocean of any West African – three times larger than the next significant marine territory and is a global hotspot for marine life.

Climate change, habitat destruction and illegal fishing pose a serious threat to Cape Verde’s marine life and also the livelihoods of the coastal fishing communities. Up to 80% of residents on Cape Verde islands depend on the ocean for their income and food security.
