Kicking off on October 21, 2023, the 2023 cohort of Ocean Leaders will convene for the third Edinburgh Ocean Leader Field Mission, this year, in the Maldives.
What is the field mission?
The field mission constitutes a fundamental pillar of the Ocean Leaders executive leadership program. It is multiday gathering of the present cohort of Ocean Leaders which happens in a different coastal location each year. It serves as a valuable opportunity for Ocean Leaders to connect face-to-face, further solidifying the teamwork and trust fostered through their regular online coaching sessions. Additionally, it serves as a platform for collective learning and knowledge sharing, enabling Ocean Leaders to delve into critical issues and collaborative problem-solving strategies in diverse and complex ocean contexts.
Throughout the week, the Ocean Leader cohort will engage in a variety of activities. This will include meetings and workshops with a spectrum of stakeholders including government officials, non-governmental organizations, and local councils engaged in ocean-related work. They will also visit a resort to learn about the measures being undertaken to promote ocean sustainability through tourism and enjoy will have the opportunity to enjoy the remarkable marine life of the Maldives.
Why the Maldives?
The Maldives, a nation where 99% of its expanse is the ocean, stands out as a unique location for ocean issues. Despite its picturesque beauty, it faces urgent challenges from climate change and shifting marine ecosystems.
Over 80% of its 1,190 islands stand just one meter above sea level, rendering them vulnerable to erosion and inundation during storms, largely attributed to rising sea levels. Additionally, rising ocean temperatures and marine heatwaves jeopardize the critical coral ecosystems that sustain the exclusive tourism industry. Meanwhile, fishing is a primary economic activity providing the largest source of employment in local communities.
This complex ocean-centric setting provides an important platform to bring together the diverse expertise of the Ocean Leaders to promote knowledge exchange and creativity.
Moreover, we are thrilled be to working with a range of partners, including Maldives Resilient Reefs and Six Senses Resort, to curate an enriching week of activities.
